• Reunion Dinners: Families gather for a grand feast on Lunar New Year’s Eve, featuring symbolic dishes like dumplings (wealth), fish (abundance), and rice cakes (growth). This meal represents unity and blessings for the coming year.

• Giving Red Envelopes: Red envelopes are filled with blessings and good fortune, symbolizing the hope that recipients will enjoy smooth sailing and success in the year ahead.

• Spring Cleaning & Decorating Homes: Before the New Year begins, families thoroughly clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and make room for good fortune. People also decorate their homes with red banners, lanterns, and paper cutouts to welcome luck and ward off evil spirits.

• Celebrations and Traditions: Lion dances, dragon dances, firecrackers, and parades are common to usher in good fortune and drive away bad energy. Visiting family and friends to exchange greetings is also an important tradition.

• Haircut: Getting a haircut before the Lunar New Year symbolizes removing troubles and misfortunes, ensuring that bad luck doesn’t follow you into the new year. It’s also a great way to refresh your look, keeping a clean and tidy appearance that enhances your energy and brings positive vibes for a prosperous start to the year.

As prices continue to rise, more and more people are facing the challenge of food shortages. Last year, 60,000 families visited the Richmond Food Bank for assistance, with demand doubling post-pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. Ken have talked to the Richmond Food Bank to better understand the severity of the food shortage and the kind of support they need right now. 

Understanding the pressing need to support families in need, the Ken Hu Team launched a Food Drive on September 7th to assist the Richmond Food Bank and provide aid to those struggling with food shortages. 

We are grateful for the support from our clients and the community of Richmond. Though we didn’t collect supermarket-sized quantities, the donations still managed to fill our cart.  While we encouraged people to donate any surplus food they had at home, many items were newly bought specifically to donate to the food bank!

Your selfless donations have made our community even more caring and connected. If you have extra food to give or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out!
